Caste and Violence

30 Jan, 2008 - Caste & Violence - Seminar on 22nd & 23rd 2008, IDCR,
Loyola College, Chennai - 34

      SYNOPCIS OF THE PROJECT
(a)Objective:
                “STUDYING THE REASONS FOR AND
BACKGROUND OF CASTE VIOLENCE IN TAMIL NADU TO
EVOLVE CONFLICT RESOLUTIONS TO PROMOTE
HARMONY BETWEEN DIFFERENT CASTE (CULTURAL)
GROUPS THAT ARE IN CONFLICT AND PROMOTE INTER-
CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING”

(b)Description of the Project:
In Tamil Nadu, violence between caste groups and
particularly between Dalits and Higher castes has caused
disturbance to communal harmony. Both in North Tamil
Nadu and in the Southern districts from 1931 onwards
until date there have been serious communal riots
resulting in loss of lives and destruction of properties
(see Appendix). From 1996 onwards this conflict has
become sharp that led to communal enmity between
different groups. This has given rise to formation of
interest groups and fundamentalist organizations that
creates communal disorder.
The project aims at evolving ways and means by which
we could create or promote communal peace between
different caste groups that are in constant conflict in
Tamil Nadu. This is a pro-active research in the sense
that we do not study the situation after a riot has
happened but we do it in peace times to uncover the
situation that leads to sudden uprising and violence. To
this end, we will choose one district in the South and one
district in the North for controlled observation and
qualitative research.
